This lovely old Gibson amp was the 'Cadillac' of the
Gibson line-up in the late 1940s. It was a favorite of jazz players of the time. I restored this amp for Jim Mings in May
2005, and he has used it extensively for recording and some gigging. I had to replace both chokes when he first brought the
amp here for restoration. I could not find one that would fit inside the chassis, so I mounted both on top of the chassis.
The two chokes are Hammonds. The large tranny in the center is the original power transformer, and the output transformer
in mounted on the main speaker frame. So, the amp is not 100% original. I had also re-capped the amp, installed new tubes
(all NOS American made), installed a grounded power cord, and replaced some wiring. The leather handle in also new. It does
have a working foot switch for the tremolo which rides in a bracket inside the cabinet.
You can see Jim's comments
about the amp on the Testimonial Page of this site.
I recently took the amp back from Jim on trade, but he decided
to take the amp back after I made some additional improvements.
Based on the speaker code, 220 336, it is possible
this amp was actually made in 1953, but I cannot prove it. There is also a P12P code on the main speaker frame. Amp also has
the back cover, which most of these surviving amps do not. It sounds terrific and should gain value over the years.
Jim is a close friend, so I am advertising his amp on my site for him. Any deal you might make with Jim on the amp will
be directly with him.
